Carrying yarns over larger areas

Sometimes the pattern will call for the yarns to be carried over many stitches. Do not be tempted to just carry the yarn from the last stitch worked in that colour to the next stitch to be worked in that colour.

As you can see in the example below the white yarn has been carried across behind the red yarn. The yarn is carried in exactly the same way as shown on carrying yarns across behind a whole row, but is only carried across behind the required number of stitches. Make sure the carried yarn is not too tight or forming loose loops, the carried yarn should just cover the length of the stitches it is carried behind. If it is possible carry the contrast colour yarn across behind a stitch of the same colour (i.e.white behind a white stitch), this is less likely to show on the right side of the work. Try and change the place that the yarn is carried from row to row, if all the carried yarns line up vertically this may show through on the right side as an unsightly line.
