Fishermen’s ganseys have been knitted since Elizabethan times by the fiancées of fishermen as wedding shirts. Many patterns are regional and this is reflected in the patterns offered from the Traditional Channel Islands Guernseys to Scottish Island ganseys. Ganseys today are worn in place of a normal sweater or jumper.
