Gathering seeds

As the summer gives way to autumn it becomes the time to gather seeds from your favourite flowers and vegetables. Commercially produced seeds are easily available online or via local garden centres. Selected cross breeding and cultivation has over the years given rise to hybrid varieties of both vegetables and flowers. The benefits are often targeted at a particular issue with that type of plant, such as pest, drought or disease tolerance.

But once you have found a particular flower, herb or vegetable does well in your garden it is quite an easy task to gather seed from them year after year. Tomatoes are, from our personal experience, quite easy to grow on year after year, not only in the popular salad size but also in the cherry size.

Once collected seeds need storage, and an envelope or paper bag make for ideal dry conditions. The risk is that the built in tolerances described above may be lost over multiple generations, but then it is a simple task of buying new and starting afresh.

To add that authentic touch to your dolls house why not treat yourself to a set of seed packets or even a ready planted seed tray. See our web shop for more details
