These can be made as bedsocks or as slippers by adding a cork sole to the base after making up the socks.
Materials required: size 19 needles, 12 metres 1-ply yarn, small length thin cord for ties.
The slippers are worked in garter stitch (every row knit) throughout.
Abbreviations: st – stitch; k – knit; gst – garter stitch (every row k); k2tog – knit next 2 sts together to make 1 stitch; psso – pass slipped stitch over stitch just knitted; ( ) – repeat instructions between brackets; inc – increase by working twice into next st to make 2 sts.
Upper (Make 2 alike)
Start at toe end. Cast on 2 sts.
Row 1: k
Row 2: inc in both sts. (4 sts)
Row 3: k
Row 4: inc in 1st st, k 2, inc in last st. (6 sts)
Row 5: k
Row 6: inc in 1st st, k 4, inc in last st. (8 sts)
Rows 7-10: k
Row 11: k 3, cast off 2 sts, k 2.
Work on last 3 sts only:
Rows 12-28: k
Cast off.
Rejoin wool to 3 sts left on needle:
Rows 12-28: k
Cast off.
Sole (Make 2 alike, but reverse one when sewing up so shape of foot is different on each giving a left and right foot)
Cast on 4 sts.
Rows 1-8: k
Row 9: inc in 1st st, k 3. (5 sts)
Rows 10-16: k
Row 17: k2tog, k 1, k2tog. (3 sts)
Row 18: k
Row 19: sl 1, k2tog, psso. (1 st)
Fasten off.
To make up:
Join centre back seam of upper. Sew soles onto upper. Run a line of cord around top of foot opening from centre front and tie in a bow. Cut out cork soles and stick to sole if required.
