Shopping

A recent TV programme in the UK said that shopping at one of the giant out of town shopping centres could be a 12-hour experience. Some of today’s shoppers make a whole day trip, which apart from the shopping itself, may include a sauna, lunch, beauty treatment and cinema visit. Children are also often catered for with adventure parks and activities. The internet too has revolutionised the way we shop. On line ordering and home delivery means, if we choose, we can keep the larder full without leaving the house.

It was the explosion in car ownership from the late 1950’s through to the 1970’s that revolutionised the way we did our shopping. The ability to travel from the local area and bring back large quantities goods made out of town shopping viable. Prior to this shopping was restricted to the local area that could be covered on foot or by public transport, such as buses or trams. Without private transport the amount of groceries that could be carried was restricted to what could fit into shopping bags, baskets, carrier bags or wheeled along in a shopping trolley.

The local shop still survives and still has a place in our busy lives. As a youngster our local shop was sometimes used in an emergency. An unannounced visit by friends or family would sometimes see children dispatched to the local shop to buy bread and sandwich fillings such as cold meat cuts, or for special visitors a can of salmon!

To recreate those days of traditional shopping for your dolls house we have a range of items on our web shop that may be of interest to you.

Happy shopping!
