10th October is the traditional day to cease picking blackberries in the British Isles. It used to be thought that blackberries left on the bushes at the end of today would be spit on by the devil making them poisonous. In actual fact by 10th October most blackberries are already past their best, but in some areas people still pick any remaining blackberries on this day and make things like Bramble Jelly (Bramble being the old name for blackberry)
Due to a calendar change in 1752 October 10th is no longer St Michael’s day, (St Michael being the saint who cast the devil out of heaven, the devil having then landed in a blackberry bush) but this date is still known as Devils Blackberry Day.
