Each year in November, the small picturesque village of Clovelly in Devon celebrates the Herring Festival.
At one time there were over 100 fishing boats using this port, now there are only one or two boats operating. Traditional Clovelly fishing boats were known as picarooners, and were powered by oar and sail. These boats were specially designed to catch herring (known locally as Silver Darlings) in the season between Michaelmas and Christmas.
