Leaves

For much of the year we probably don’t even notice that trees even have leaves. But come autumn (Fall) the golden colours catch our attention. A lane lined by autumnal trees makes for a beautiful sight. In North America the area known as New England has a whole tourist industry driven by the millions of trees in full fall colours.

Of course the colour of the leaves looks great while they are still on the tree but once they start to fall they are either a great plaything, a home or a nuisance. As children we walked along lanes or streets kicking the piles of dead leaves into the air. Under Horse Chestnut trees we’d gather looking for the best and biggest conkers. For hedgehogs and other small creatures they become insulation against the forthcoming winter. But for gardeners they can be an unwelcome addition to a fine lawn or border.

One smell of autumn has to be the bonfire of burning leaves. This is now becoming something of the past as garden vacs can now vacuum your garden much like you do the lounge carpet. Sadly many then throw them away, but leaf mould is a traditional fertiliser that returns nutrients back to the soil. Before the advent of the garden vac the traditional method of clearing leaves was with a fine tine rake or besom broom. Here again nature provides. A bundle of twigs secured to a pole and the besom broom is ready for work. This can also double up around Halloween as a means of transport for you local witch!
