Afternoon Tea and High Tea

Afternoon tea
This is peculiarly British event, which goes back many years. Although a British tradition taking afternoon tea can be found in many parts of the world particularly where the old British Empire spread.

Afternoon tea consists of a light meal taken normally between 3 and 5pm. Usually a pot of tea made from loose leaved tea with milk and sugar was accompanied with sandwiches (cucumber. salmon, egg or ham). The desert was usually some kind of cake, pastries or scones. The food would be served on a silver tiered stand and the table dressed in a fine tablecloth. Changes in social behaviour and working hours now mean that this traditional practice is seldom observed. Many quality London hotels still offer afternoon tea at prices typically ranging from £15 to £25. This is also true of many hotels in countries associated historically with the UK. Occasionally during the summer when the weather allowed afternoon tea would be moved out doors to the grounds or as a picnic in the countryside.

High tea
Again a tradition lost in the histories of time and seldom observed today. It was taken in the slot between afternoon tea and the main evening meal or around 5 to 6pm. Often high tea would replace both afternoon tea and the evening meal. High tea (so called as it was taken at the main or high table) would normally consist of cold meats, fish, egg and sandwiches. High tea has become, more recently, a term for elaborate afternoon tea, though this is an American term and mainly not associated with Britain.
