The Wedding Breakfast

The origins of this English Tradition are unclear, as the Wedding Breakfast may take place at any time during the day. It either dates from the time before the wedding ceremony when the bride and groom were expected to fast before the Nuptial Mass, or some say it may be the symbolic nature of the breakfast being the first meal of the day so this meal is the first meal of their married lives.

This traditional sit down wedding breakfast consists of a Top Table with the Bride and Groom, Chief Bridesmaid, Best Man and the Bride and Grooms parents. There is a strict etiquette on where these people are seated. The other family members and friends are then seated at ‘lower’ tables off the main table or at smaller tables in the room. However it is now quite common to have a buffet style reception where guests help themselves to food from side tables, rather than being waited upon.

The wedding cake is cut at the end of the meal, but prior to any toasts that are made. Both bride and groom cut the wedding cake together, the first symbolic act they perform together and they then share the first slice of cake.

During the Wedding Breakfast toasts are made and drunk to the Bride and Groom and then the Groom will respond with a toast to the Bridesmaids, to which the Best Man will respond.
