For many this competition will pass by unnoticed. For many others it is already an intriguing battle between the worlds top cricketing countries. With the first round of games already completed there have been a number of surprise results. The competition got under way with the Netherlands defeating hosts England. By the end of the first round of matches giants Australia were already out without winning a game and Ireland were through at the expense of Bangladesh. Sadly for the Netherlands their hopes of getting into the next round (known as the Super 8’s) failed when they were defeated by Pakistan.

The weather so far has been an important factor, with what has been even by English standards poor. Playing cricket in 12 degrees centigrade with a howling wind, often with rain has been a big factor.

The basics of the game are that each team has twenty overs to score as big a total as possible so that the opponents fall short of their score. The highest score so far has been 211 by South Africa. The tournament runs until 21st June with the final at Lords cricket ground. Let’s hope the weather has improved by then and a good exciting match finishes off the tournament.

To keep you cricketers warm in this chill weather, why not knit a 1:12th scale jumper.
